Mastering Exposure and Using Filters

Mastering exposure is often regarded as complex and technical and is avoided by many photographers.  In reality a combination of relatively simple steps can bring out the light and the life of an image.

One of the most important parts of making a good photograph is understanding and controlling exposure which is why we created this workshop.

Mastering Exposure and Using Filters

Having an appreciation of light and tones and how they render in the finished photograph is critical to achieving successful images.

There are several controls at the disposal of the photographer that can be used and will be covered in this photography workshop:

  • assessing the lighting conditions and metering methods
  • dealing with shadow and highlight problems
  • filters at time of capture
  • in-camera controls including use of aperture and shutter speed, choice of ISO, exposure compensation
  • interpreting and using histograms in-camera
  • post processing
Culmination of the above controls gives the photographer a great deal of power in the creation of the image, the expression of light and conveying mood.

In summary, mastering exposure is often regarded as complex and technical and avoided by many photographers.  In reality a combination of relatively simple steps can bring out the light and the life of an image.
