• Photography Workshop - Winter in the Canadian Rockies

There are a number of landscapes in the world that are truly transformed during the cold winter months and The Canadian Rockies is one that never fails to deliver with perfect conditions. We will be based in the heart of the Canadian Rockies in the picturesque Lake Louise Village a short drive away from two of the most famous lakes, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in Banff National Park.

On this workshop we will be visiting three adjoining National Parks, Banff, Yoho and Kooteney all of which experience sub-zero temperatures. Trees are veiled in hoar frost, snow is pristine and rivers and waterfalls are frozen. At this time of the year the sun is low in the sky and the sunrises and sunsets are second to none. Also commonplace in the depths of winter are the mists that hang over the lakes and in the valleys adding that extra winter dimension to photographs.

The variety of winter landscape photography opportunities are vast and we will be spending plenty of time visiting the area that the world famous Icefields Parkway travels through and visiting Herbert Lake, Bow Lake and stand on the banks of Waterfowl Lakes looking up at the snow capped mountains of White Pyramid and Howes Peak. We will take the mountain pass to the top of Bow Summit, and from here, we take an easily short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the staggeringly beautiful turquoise waters of Petyo Lake nestled beneath the summit of Carldron Peak.

During our time we drive along Route 11 and travel onto the Kooteny Plains for a vey different experience of The Canadian Rockies. These plains are a vast open space through which the Saskatchewan River runs that is a beautiful glacial turquoise colour that leads to Abraham Lake which is frozen many feet thick displaying ice patterns and trapped air bubbles beneath its surface. No visit to Banff National Park would be complete without photographing the landscapes surrounding Bow Valley Parkway with staggering views towards Castle Mountain and a visit to Johnston Canyon cut deep by glacial melt waters. Late in the day as the sun dips down we will explore the banks of Vermillion Lakes and look across to Sundance Peak.

We travel east to Yoho National Park and enter British Columbia and experience the mighty Takakkaw Falls that cascade 850ft into the river below and make our way to the tranquillity of Emerald Lake which certainly lives up to its name! Also whilst we are in British Columbia we take Highway 93 into the vast open space of Kooteney National park visiting Marble Canyon and the open plains to Vermillion River and Simpson River. Throughout your time in the wonderful winter landscape of The Canadian Rockies you will have Paul Gallagher on hand to offer you 1 to 1 tuition so that you make the very best of every moment in this beautiful country and take home with you images that capture your time there.
