We offer a workshops that are either class room based or 'in the field'.
Class room based workshops are orientated towards spending time in a 'class room' where you receive presentations and lectures on the topic in hand. They are interactive sessions and there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss in more detail the areas that are of more interest to the class.
Our 'in the field' workshops are just that. Spending from 1 day to 2 weeks on location provides you with real hands on experience whilst still being individually coached.
We want our workshops to have a strong educational and learning content.
So after a short introduction, both to the topic and to each other, we'll clearly explain key principles using example images on the screen along with group discussion. Often you will have the opportunity review some of the images you have brought along. That way, by applying and reviewing what we';e just learnt, we can turn principles into practice, and practice into understanding.
On these we'll be moving between locations and viewpoints that have been specifically selected beforehand. We'll then spend a couple of hours or more at each location exploring and taking pictures. As we do the workshop leader will be working with everyone one-to-one or in small groups to assist and give guidance. Both at the hotel venue and in the field, the leader will cover specific aspects of photography in depth and in a structured way. These 'tuition' sessions may vary from say 15 or 30 minutes at a field location, to an hour or so in a venue meeting room. Again the aim is to provide a valuable basis of learning with getting out and shooting some great images in the field.
A lot! Our workshops are very interactive. At the start of each session we'll discuss if there are any specific areas that you want to cover so this can be planned in. Each workshop is supported by detailed notes for you to take away and refer to after the event.
Given that we emphasise the practical as well as the theoretical, you'll have a great opportunity to really understand what's being taught about the subject you choose. We really want you to come away feeling that you've achieved something very worthwhile on the workshop and have added significantly to your skills.
Classroom-based workshops usually start at 9.30 and finish at 17.00. We start with introductions and an explanation of the programme.
Times of field workshops vary depending on locations and likely travel arrangements. Typically a field workshop will commence at 10.00 on the first day and finish around 16.00 on the last day. During the rest of the time whilst there is light we are available to shoot.
Full details will be provided as part of the joining instructions sent out prior to the workshop.
We pride ourselves on offering full days on our workshops. That means for field based workshops we often arrange for everyone to meet the evening prior to the workshop commencing in earnest. Equally, on the last day of the workshop we will continue until 4 pm in order to get as much time out in the field as possible to take photographs.
Firstly you will get one or two full days (as specified for each workshop) of photography tuition and guidance with plenty of one to one interaction from the workshop tutor.
For class based workshops, the price includes the following:
- tuition as specified in the workshop description
- practical sessions to really help you understand what you have learnt
- workshop notes - these are comprehensive and help you follow up after the workshop
- a coffee and tea service in the morning and again in the afternoon
- a light lunch, typically a buffet
- limited class sizes
- a dedicated classroom environment in carefully selected and high quality hotels
Class based workshops do not include accommodation, though we can usually help you find somewhere local or indeed the hotel being used to host the workshop will often have rooms available.
Firstly you will get full days of photography tuition and guidance with plenty of one to one interaction from the workshop tutor in excellent and photographically rich locations.
Field Based workshops are include the following unless noted otherwise:
- tuition as specified in the workshop description
- very limited class sizes so that you can benefit from plenty of one on one tuition and guidance
- workshop notes
- an A3plus print of one of your images from the workshop (only workshops > 3 days)
- overnight accommodation in a quality hotel for the duration of the workshop
- breakfast, lunch (often a packed lunch as we will be out in the field) and dinner
- transportation during the workshop to/from photography locations
In all cases transportation to the workshop venue, your personal and/or travel insurance and other items not specified are not included in the price. Alcoholic beverages and other drinks taken outside of meal times and other extras purchased during your stay at the hotel will need to be settled directly with the hotel.
For 1- and 2-day classroom-based workshops, accommodation is not included in the price since participants may live locally or prefer to stay with friends or at B&B's. Of course it's possible to stay at the workshop venue, in which case this should be booked directly with the venue. Links to the hotels are included in the 'where, when and price' part of each workshop description.
Unless noted otherwise, accommodation for the duration of the workshop is included in the price of field workshops. Should you wish to extend your stay by coming the day before a workshop commences or staying on thereafter, arrangements can be made directly with the hotel or through ourselves.
For classroom-based workshops, a light lunch and refreshments are included. Any other meals should be arranged as part of your accommodation. For field workshops, all meals are included (breakfast, packed lunch and dinner). Clients will need to settle their own bills for drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) taken with meals and at the bar.
Any special dietary requirements should be communicated to us. This should be done sufficiently done in advance of the workshop to allow us to communicate to the hotel or venue your particular requirements.
Workshops descriptions specifically note if they are designed for beginners or for more advanced levels. See the following questions for full description of ability levels:
What is a beginner?
What level is intermediate?
What level is advanced?
What is a Master Class?
If you are t all unsure of what level you are or whether a particular workshop is suited to you, please do not hesitate to call or email us. We would be very happy to help you select the right workshop.
For class based workshops this can be up to 10 for a 2 day workshop or 12 for a 1 day workshop. We've found that this works very well. More is OK for certain workshop topics, but most require a significant degree of interaction and practical attention. Interestingly we've found that having very low group numbers can be less effective as participants always bring their own varied experiences and interests to sessions like this. It's valuable to get that group input and involvement which can otherwise be missing with lower numbers.
Field based workshops are smaller and are usually limited to 5 people. Master Classes are usually limited to 3people. Smaller numbers in the field means that we can still provide a lot of one to one tuition and individual attention from the workshop leader.
We all have to begin somewhere, so we have developed beginner photography workshops designed specifically to help novices or casual photographers to really get going and get on top of the basics.
Beginner workshops are focused on teaching, showing, and practising the cornerstones of satisfying photography. Our recommendation for a beginner is to be able to have confidence in the following:
These workshops are mostly one-day classroom or studio based workshops, where the emphasis is on learning. They are held in excellent venues which combine the best of effective meeting facilities set in attractive surroundings.
There are also one- and two-day field based Landscape workshops to introduce the fundamentals of this popular genre of outdoor photography. In all cases, experienced tutors are on hand to provide guidance and answer questions in a clear and helpful way.
No prior experience or knowledge is necessary to participate in any of these workshops. Browse the individual workshop pages for more ideas on how we can help you make the great leap forward!
The intermediate photography workshops are practical stepping stones to greater confidence with technique and with visual creativity and expression. They are educational and enjoyable sessions designed for photographers who want to take their photography to the next level and create powerful and satisfying images more consistently.
The Intermediate range of workshops is perfectly suited if you already have a grasp of some of the basics, and now wish to learn more or deepen your confidence in a broader range of techniques and approaches to photography. Take a look at the menu of topics covered for some ideas about what to do next.
Experienced and knowledgeable photographers are still often looking to refine their skills and their ability to express themselves fully. Others who may have mastered a chosen genre, such as studio work, would like to explore and refresh their creative skills out in the landscape for example.
We offer a range of advanced photography workshops for photographers who are basically fluent with their current equipment and approach and who now want to benefit from in-depth tuition and guidance in a specific area.
Whether you want to capture moody photographs of light at play or the elements inaction, learn about the magic of black and white photography or confidently master exposure and tone, there's an inspiring workshop that will help you do just that. The range also goes deeper into post processing of images and successful printing techniques.
There's a tempting and extensive menu of advanced field and classroom-based workshops to help you to develop and consolidate your skills and try out new kinds of photography.
The Master Class series of photography workshops is provided for photographers who probably already proficient in their chosen field, but wish to refine, extend and deepen their personal approach with the support o highly experienced tutors - those who are acknowledged for being outstanding practitioners and excellent communicators of their craft.
These workshops provide the opportunity to explore and probe chosen areas of photography in depth, Whether it it's about creativity, expression or virtually any aspect of camera or post processing techniques.
The Master Class series will be challenging.Workshops will be limited to no more than 3 places, to ensure that participants have plenty of personal guidance, interaction and one to one time with their workshop leader. This gives time for a variety of project work which can be tailor-made to individual needs, as well as detailed reviews of work in progress. In addition, to in the field experience you will have plenty of opportunity to follow up with your workshop leader after returning home.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop your unique talents and achieve the level of photography you are aiming for.
Each course is supported by detailed information material for you to take away and refer to after the event.
For some kinds of photography - landscape in particular and to some extent travel photography, filters can be extremely valuable for improving an image by helping to manage the dynamic range of the exposure.
If you don't have filters then we usually have some additional kits provided by Lee Filters that you can try on the workshop. Then you can see for yourself what they do, and you can decide if you'd like to get your own filters later on.
For the few workshops where filters are specifically recommended, you'll find additional information in the joining instructions, including buying tips.
If you would like further advice on this topic then please do not hesitate to contact us.
It depends on the topic. For many workshops any kind of equipment can be used: from compact cameras to DSLRs and beyond, and whether digital or film.
Generally we believe that great photography is more about the image than about the equipment, although of course being familiar and confident with your equipment gives more scope and satisfaction. So we do have workshops specifically designed to assist beginners to use their cameras fully. There are also some more advanced specialist workshops, and for these the equipment requirements are mentioned in the workshop description page.
Contact us if you have any questions at all about this.

This is located at the top left corner of every web page.
This is a powerful tool that searches all the photography workshops, the latest news and the frequently asked questions.
Simply enter one or more keywords that you wish to search on, for example, ‘composition’. Keywords entered must be more than 4 characters on length.
You can also use the operators ‘+’, ‘or’, ‘and’ to search. For example, the keywords ‘composition + beginner’ will show all pages on the web site that have both the words ‘composition’ and ‘beginner’.
Equally, if you entered ‘composition’ or ‘beginner’, all pages on the web site that have either the word ‘composition’ or ‘beginner’ will be shown.
If the keywords you enter do not return any results or do not show pages that are of interest to you, then try another key word.
To search for photography workshops use the ‘Workshop - Advanced Search’ in the left hand panel. You can find workshops by date, tutor, location and type.
