Knowing where to start - Knowing what to do - Not leaving it to chance

Often, the very initial stages of editing an image can literally mean the make or break of a finished photograph. Faced with so many choices of software, tools and sliders, it is all too easy to embark on a journey whereby the outcome is undecided. It is all very well and good to have an understanding of the tools and how they work, but this is little use if we have not decided how and why we are applying them and when.

There are no hard rules in image editing, but there are many pitfalls that can lead the photographer to recovering the file rather than refining the file, and this must begin with interpretation of the file and setting out the journey which will realise its full potential. This begins with visualisation and what you want to finished image to look like, considering the qualities of the RAW camera file and understanding its potential.

RAW camera files are to the digital world what a negative was to the film world. They often look flat and lifeless and bear no resemblance to what you saw when you were there with your camera. It is at this point where it is very tempting to have a go at some of the sliders and tools in the hope that we will get a good finished image.

The biggest impact for me was understanding the importance of the histogram and not just when you use your camera in the field.
