Autumn In Colorado
The Golden Season
There are few mountainous landscapes in the world that are as spectacular as the Colorado Rocky Mountains in North America. During this eight day adventure, we'll take you deep into the heart of these landscapes, high and rugged mountains that stretch across Colorado.
This area is known for some of the largest and most breath taking Aspen groves. We will take you to the best locations to capture the vibrant golden hues of the leaves against the rugged mountain peaks. We will spend our days driving dusty country roads that wind their way to unmatched autumnal scenery. It’s not uncommon to spend all morning photographing aspen groves, perfectly still pond reflections bursting in colour, or jagged mountain ranges above a tapestry of turning leaves.
Each day as the sun rises, the light creeps across the landscape slowly illuminating the vibrant yellow aspens and we will make sure you are in the right locations to capture the magic! With a bit of good fortune, we may even catch some early season snow on the peaks!
Over the eight days of this spectacular tour we will be based in three main locations enabling us to be surrounded by the landscape we can photograph whilst we stay there. Our tour will begin in Ouray also known as “The Switzerland of America” nestled in the beauty of the San Juan Mountains. From here we will travel to Kebbler Pass and Crested Butte which offer high altitude mountain stunning views where the landscape glows in autumn colour as well as Dallas Divide and the wonderfully named Last Dollar Road.
Our second base will be Buena Vista close to the famous Independence Pass, Cottonwood Pass and Twin Lakes. Independence Pass alone reaches an altitude of 3600 metres (12,000ft) and stretches for 32 miles and goes up and over the continental divide of the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains with views that will leave you speechless! No visit to this area of the Colorado Rocky Mountains would be complete without visiting the glacial lakes of the area. The scenery of Maroon Bells from the banks of Maroon lake are unmatched and a visit to The Twin Lakes at the foot of Colorado’s highest peak Mount Elbert is a must.
Our third base will be Colorado Springs and we will take the Wilkerson Pass high in the Plains of the Pike National Forest known for its Aspen groves that line the roadway with countless photographic opportunities. We will also take in the Garden of the Gods which is close to where we will be based with its fascinating red rock spires that reach for the skies and we will venture into North Cheyenne Canon (or Canyon) rich in waterfalls and woodland where we could spend many hours.
The beauty of Colorado during the autumn months is like few other places on earth and will certainly prove to be the trip of a lifetime. All of us as landscape photographers are naturally drawn to the autumn season and its spellbinding colours and this tour is an opportunity to experience the best the world has to offer.
