Venice
The City of 400 Bridges
Venice is often called ‘La Serenissima’, ‘the most serene’, and when you visit this amazing city built on over 100 small islands and linked by more than 400 bridges, it is easy to see why.
In the centre of Venice there are no roads to spoil the enduring beauty and time seems to move more slowly amidst its iconic architecture and waterways. Venice was once a trading superpower with the associated wealth funding the spectacular architecture spanning the Byzantine, Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance periods. Even if you have not visited Venice before you will likely have a vision of the city in your mind’s eye and this is a photographic location that will live up to, and probably exceed, your expectations.

During the tour we will explore many iconic locations including Piazza San Marco, home of St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and Bridge of Sighs, the Rialto Bridge and, of course, the Grand Canal. Whilst each of these locations provides a host of photographic opportunities, we will also take time to explore some of the less well known and quieter back streets, or calles, in areas such as Dorsoduro and Cannaregio.

Using the Vaporettos (water bus) we will also cross the lagoon and venture to the island of Burano, home to wonderfully colourful houses nestled alongside its own network of canals. The Vaporettos will also enable us to visit Giudecca and San Giorgio Maggiore to take in some classic views back towards Basilica Santa Maria della Salute and the Doges Palace.

We have scheduled this tour for late October so that, if we wish, we can take in either sunrise or sunset, or maybe take a walk with our cameras after dark. For the early risers watching and photographing sunrise from the Ponte dell’Accademia is a memory that will last long, and for those who prefer a lie in, we may get the opportunity to watch the sunset across the city from the top of the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore.

During the day as well as visiting the many iconic locations across the city we will of course make time to soak up the atmosphere of watching Venetian life pass by from one of the many street cafes. Opportunities to make intimate and personal images abound at every turn as we cross the many canals and take time to meander along quiet alleyways.

For this tour, you will be in the capable hands of Mark Lawrence who has visited Venice many times and has over 40 years’ photography experience. Mark will be on hand to guide you through this wonderful city and help you achieve the best from your time in Venice.
