Discovering Expressive Photography

A Photography Retreat

Photography can be more than capturing beautiful scenes, it can be a way of seeing that expresses who you are and how you feel. Discovering Expressive Photography is a purposeful retreat designed to help you move beyond literal representation and develop images that carry emotional resonance, personal perspective and visual language. Over five days in the inspiring surroundings of Augill Castle and its landscapes, we’ll explore how choices of perspective, light, tone and storytelling transform photographs into meaningful work that speaks to both you and the viewer. This photography retreat is about making photographs about something rather than just of something.

5th - 9th April, 2027 - with Paul Gallagher FRPS and Michael Pilkington FRPS - £2,995.00 - Now Booking

Whilst we all want to make great images of places we visit, expressive photography is characterized by its ability to convey emotions, moods, and personal experiences through visual imagery. Expressive photographs ask the viewer to feel something such as solitude, calm or even tension and unease. It is often said that a photographer should evolve and make images that are not simply of’ something but about’ something.

We will explore subjectivity and how a personal perspective can influence image interpretation revealing the photographers unique visual language.

At some stage in our photographic journeys, we will have experienced the work of photographers that express ambiguity whereby the narrative of the picture is not always noticeable at first or were the photographer has employed the power of suggestion encouraging the viewer ponder and reflect.

Sometimes photographs are presented in a way that goes way beyond recording a moment in time, but they convey drama or solace with the considered application of colour palette, light and shadow and certainly composition. We want to show you how to create photographs the resonate emotionally that also tell compelling stories.

What you will learn

During our time together on this Photography Retreat we will discuss these enlightening skills and how we can make choices of perspective, emotional input that convey a deeper meaning through a visual language. During our time in these breath taking surroundings, you will be encouraged to take your time and relax into the experience of being there and making photographs that will come together as a unique portfolio to you. By the end of the retreat, you will:

Understand the difference between descriptive and expressive photography

Recognise your own emerging preferences and patterns of seeing

Edit your work with greater clarity and purpose

Begin building a small body of images that feel personally authentic

Leave with a clearer sense of direction in your photographic journey

This retreat is not about chasing dramatic light or collecting portfolio pieces. It is about understanding what draws you to a scene in the first place — and shaping your photographs so that they communicate that feeling with clarity and intent.

Being Intentional

Expressive photography begins with intent. Before thinking about settings or composition, we consider what the photograph is about. What are you responding to? Atmosphere, solitude, tension, calm?

Once that is clear, every decision (perspective, focal length, exposure, processing) becomes a means of reinforcing that intent.

Our aim

We want to engage in questions, conversation and intrigue, all the time allowing yourself to be as creative as you feel. All approaches to photography will be welcomed. We want you to create a portfolio that will never been repeated, one that is derived by a communion between you and your chosen subject, in whatever way you choose to express yourself. This retreat is designed for you to wander freely and make a personal connection with how you feel about your surroundings.

A supportive and peaceful environment

We have chosen Augill Castle nestled between the tranquil landscapes the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales in which we can immerse ourselves in a place that is literally a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. During our time together you will enjoy the highest quality accommodation, fine meals which are all included, and we will have our own private meeting room where Paul and Michael will share their experience.

This workshop is for photographers who feel there is something more they want from their images — even if they are not yet sure what that is.
